Interactive Puzzle for Rural Fire Prevention Project (WOF)

Side 1- Base of puzzle: Bad Household

Side 1 - Puzzle - Good Household

This puzzle was created for the SA project Working on Fire (WOF),
which is part of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF).
WOF is dedicated to preventing and managing wild fires in rural areas.

This resource actually consists of two puzzles, thereby maximising the materials used by being printed on both sides of  the base and both sides of the puzzle itself. It has proved to be an entertaining, effective and popular method of communicating right and wrong actions to a variety of age groups.

Each base shows a scene where everything is wrong, and each puzzle corrects these things. The child therefore sees what is wrong and learns how to fix the problems by doing the puzzle. These are valuable lessons that the child can take home to his or her parents, which could prevent the loss of jobs, homes, land, crops and ultimately human and other species' lives.

(Below) This interactive puzzle is the same principle is that of WOF above.

It has a base that shows all the bad stuff - what we don't want.

The puzzle itself shows all the good stuff. By doing the puzzle the child sees the problems and corrects them.

HOW IS ENERGY GENERATED?

The wall chart below was entirely original to Greenprint. It has now become part of the school syllabus.

It was created with information and advice from several independent academic experts.

The above wall chart on Nutrition was later accompanied by one on hygiene. It was distributed to schools thoughout the country, and was designed to be comprehensible to all  - even children with low levels of literacy.

Let's Use our Last Chance to Save the Earth!

Greenprint seeks funding in order to continue advocating, communicating and demonstrating practical transformation. it presents radical change that makes sense. It discovers and implements viable options aimed at poverty alleviation and sustainable development. It colourfully profiles innovative technologies, shifts in attitudes, legislative issues, food provision, self-sufficiency, youth in disadvantaged communities, literacy, disease prevention, eco-housing, services, energy generation, safety, education, governance, security, social development and philosophical frameworks. Communications resources provide compelling arguments and legitimate options for radical change, whilst grass roots projects ensure there is living proof of the practicality of that which it advocates.

Earthyear Symposium - Richard Leaky PDF Print E-mail

Creating Awareness & Funds: the launch of “The Sixth Extinction”

One day my 12 year old son gave me a message: “Some guy from Kenya called. Said he can’t leave his landline number because President Moi has tapped his phone. He’ll call again from his mobile next time he gets to the top of a hill.”

“Good grief! What’s his name?” I asked, reasonably enough.

“Dunno. Can’t remember exactly... it sounded a bit like an inefficient plumber.”

“You don’t mean Leaky!” I exclaimed. “THE Richard Leaky? The most famous palaeontologist in the world?”

“Yeah, that’s the guy.” said Sean laconicallly, as he returned to playing his game on my Mac. “Some twit who reckons we descended from apes.”

The result was the Earthyear Symposium, created to raise funds and awareness for Leaky's visionary book, “The Sixth Extinction”. Various high profile academic and public events were organised - with prime time South African TV and newspaper coverage. All funds were donated to the Leaky Foundation and to Dr. Ian Player's Wilderness Foundation.

Dr. Ian Player, who was invited as a guest speaker, arrived with a valuable item to be auctioned to assist with our fund-raising efforts . . .his younger brother Gary Player’s very first golf club!

Wilderness and the Human Spirit PDF Print E-mail

By Sir Laurens van der Post - forward by Dr. Ian Player

This magnificent leather bound limited edition coffee table book was conceptualised, edited, designed and produced in its entirety as a donation to the Wilderness Foundation by Earthyear / Cameron Design. Shortly before his death at the age of ninety, Sir Laurens van der Post gave a sheaf of his original, unpublished writings to his good friend Dr Ian Player, the highly respected Founder and Director of the Wilderness Foundation. Exquisite photography was provided pro-bono by Gerald Cubitt, whilst sponsors were sourced through Earthyear Magazine’s advertisers to cover most of the print costs. The shortfall was donated by Earthyear, and 600 numbered copies of this unique, beautifully produced book were given the Wilderness Foundation.. These were sold at international auctions and charity events, with all proceeds going to the Wilderness Foundation.

The first three numbered copies were bought at National Geographic Society fund-raising auctions by Prince Charles, Bill Clinton and none other than US ex Vice- President - Al Gore!
